Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park: Experience the ancient past!

Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park provides the ultimate “into-the-past” experience – there’s nowhere else quite like it. About 12 million years ago the area was blanketed in a thick layer of volcanic ash, which had an absolutely devastating effect on the area wildlife. Large numbers of the ancient creatures died immediately, with many more perishing over time, and many of the skeletons of these long-dead beats were preserved. These remains form large parts of the many exhibits here at the park.
Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park is filled with lots of fantastic things to do and is suitable for all ages. Visitors can enjoy time at the Dickinson Fossil Heritage Center which has many interactive exhibits including bone puzzles and a fossil dig for children, a look at what causes petrified wood, and information on the Nebraska river system which is very remarkably interesting. The Hubbard Rhino Barn is another area of the park that you will want to discover, especially if you are a budding palaeontologist. Here visitors can watch as a real, live archaeological dig takes place! This is truly something to experience, and you never know, you might even see new fossils being unearthed during your trip!
There are also slideshows and videos which you can view that will keep you up to date on the work that is going on in the park. These make sure that no one misses out on any of the amazing finds that have been uncovered here over the years. The Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park is certainly worth visiting and it is ideal for family days out, school trips, student day trips.
